Medford, Ashland, Grants Pass, and Roseburg anchor a region of mild climate, wine country, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Crater Lake, and the wild Rogue River. Warmer and sunnier than western Oregon.

Southern Oregon attracts retirees and remote workers for its mild climate (the Medford-Ashland area gets considerably more sun than Portland), relatively affordable housing, and access to outdoor recreation. Medford is the regional healthcare hub (Asante Rogue Regional, Providence Medford). The Umpqua Valley around Roseburg is emerging wine country with lower land prices. Klamath Falls is an agricultural and outdoor recreation center with some of the state's most affordable housing. Douglas County's coastal-adjacent communities offer rural living near the Umpqua River.

Crater Lake National Park — the deepest lake in the US at 1,943 feet and with famously vivid blue water — is Southern Oregon's iconic destination. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland runs from February to October. Rafting and jetboat excursions on the wild and scenic Rogue River, Wildlife Images Rehabilitation Center in Grants Pass, Wildlife Safari drive-through park in Winston, and Applegate Valley and Umpqua Valley winery trails round out the region.
